Traumatising Television

A friend loaned me the first two seasons of Dexter recently, and my fiancé and I just got around to watching them…
And season 1 was traumatising for this little lady. It’s a good show, in some ways, but the gore of the first season left me feeling sickened and quiet after each episode. I kept watching because I wanted to know where the story went, but nonetheless, I felt upset after watching. I’m a little squeamish about unnecessary violence, I’ll admit that openly. But the level of that in this show was really surprising… I didn’t expect that in a TV show, usually just in movies I would never watch, like this heinous Saw movies.
Something that surprised me about this was just how much this sort of thing affects me visually, compared to reading it. I am in the process of reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, and the only thing that detracts from this series in my opinion is Erikson’s fairly dedicated use of horrific violence. The series would be better for being less graphically violent, and whilst it does upset me, it doesn’t upset me quite as much as seeing some of that really nasty stuff on Dexter.
Season 2 was better, in that regard, less disgustingly brutal goings on, thankfully. The story lines in the show are pretty good, many of the characters stand out as being written very well, but Dexter’s internal monologuing can get a bit much.
Now, with how that show made me feel, I think I need to include a comforting pattern in today’s post. I think it has to be a blanket, something nice to snuggle up with fiancé with on the couch. This one here is quite pretty, though you have to sign up with Bernat to be able to download the pattern. It’s a free sign up, and free pattern of course, and a nice easy process. I love finding pattern resources, they are so exciting!
